Although Hurricane Fausto is expected to weaken before reaching the vicinity of Hawaii, Honolulu officials are urging Oahu residents to use the weekend to review their hurricane preparedness plans.
Mayor Rick Blangiardi said today that it remains too early to know whether Fausto will affect the islands, but emphasized that residents should take advantage of the advance notice to prepare for the remainder of hurricane season.
“Preparedness is the best defense against any emergency,” Blangiardi said in a statement. “While it is far too early to know whether Hurricane Fausto will affect Hawaiʻi, now is the perfect time to make sure your family has an emergency plan, your disaster supply kit is stocked, and you are signed up to receive emergency alerts. Taking a few simple steps today can make a significant difference if a storm does approach our islands.”
The city said it is coordinating with the National Weather Service and the Hawaiʻi Emergency Management Agency as officials continue monitoring the storm.

The Central Pacific hurricane season runs through Nov. 30, and officials said residents should remain prepared throughout the season regardless of the current forecast.
