Aiea house fire caused by unattended candle, HFD says

A two-story house fire in Aiea Saturday was caused by an unattended candle, according to the Honolulu Fire Department, which classified the blaze as accidental.

HFD said a fire investigator determined that the Iwaiwa Street fire originated in the living room, where a candle ignited synthetic flowers and decorative cloth.

The estimated damage cost was $1 million, including $986,000 to property and $30,000 to contents, HFD officials said today.

The fire, which broke out at about 11 a.m., displaced three occupants.

Two occupants who exited the house on their own during the fire were injured. Honolulu Emergency Medical Services treated a 47-year-old woman for smoke inflation and burns, and a 67-year-old man for smoke inhalation. Both were taken to a hospital in serious condition.

HFD officials remind the public not to leave candles or open flames unattended.
