Maine State Police are seeking the public’s aid in identifying the driver involved in a crash that injured a construction worker on Interstate 95 northbound in Pittsfield last week.
Police were dispatched to the crash near mile marker 150 of the interstate at about 8:15 a.m. on Oct. 14, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a news release that afternoon.
On Tuesday, state police released a photograph of the vehicle they suspect was involved.
Investigators determined a light-colored pickup truck hauling a black dump trailer struck a concrete Jersey barrier on the right side of the roadway as well as an orange construction barrel, Moss said. The crash occurred in a single-lane construction zone.
The construction barrel was “propelled” into Richard Smart, 56, of Westfield, Moss said. Smart is an employee of Northeast Construction and was working with a crew unloading Jersey barriers at the time.
Smart was transported to Northern Light Sebasticook Valley Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, Moss said. He has since been released.
The operator, whom Moss said investigators believe is male and was aware of the crash, continued driving north.
“Witnesses reported seeing the driver turn around in his vehicle as the crash occurred before speeding away,” Moss said.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about the vehicle or operator is requested to contact the Bangor Regional Communications Center at 207-973-3700, ext. 9, and ask for Trooper Klayton Peckham.
