Collins’ record is not pro-feminist

As a feminist older than Cynthia Dill and a former high school basketball and field hockey player, I was stunned by her calling Susan Collins a “feminist” (“Susan Collins is a feminist’s best investment,” Aug. 2).

I, like Dill, have questions about transgender women playing women’s sports. I believe we simply do not know yet whether the biological playing field is level. We need more research and until we know more, it should not be a political issue.

One problem I have with calling Susan Collins a feminist is her vote for Brett Kavanaugh. I watched his Supreme Court confirmation hearings and I still question the judgment of a senator who voted for a man who treated women appallingly and who thought it wise to repeat how much he liked beer.

If Collins was gullible enough to believe Kavanaugh would uphold Roe v. Wade, that alone should be a disqualifier. But now that our rights have been taken away, who will protect us? Susan Collins, who helped end Roe v. Wade, or Troy Jackson, who protected women’s rights in Maine? It’s an easy choice for me.

Collins touts that Maine women are protected (thanks to the Democratic Maine Legislature) but ignores the fact that she should protect all American women, not just Mainers. If Maine women move to a state where reproductive rights are not protected (there are 13), their very lives are at risk.

Look at Collins’ long record and see how she has supported the most corrupt, mysogynistic president in U.S. history. That is not feminism.
