Steven Koecher parked his car in a Sun City Anthem cul-de-sac around noon on Dec. 13, 2009.
Surveillance recordings show a man thought to be Koecher walking away from the 2003 Chevy Cavalier a short time later.
The St. George, Utah, resident hasn’t been heard from since.
“It’s extremely frustrating,” Koecher’s father, Rolf, told the Review-Journal in 2010. “Here’s a young man who had a bunch of friends, and he just disappears on a beautiful Sunday morning in a really nice neighborhood. … It doesn’t add up.”
Koecher, a devout Mormon who was 30 when he disappeared, is the focus of “Disappeared in the Desert,” an episode of the Freeform true-crime docuseries “Somebody Knows Something” that debuted Monday.
Cellphone records indicated Koecher spoke with two friends on Dec. 13. Rolf Koecher said his son told both that he was in Las Vegas.
Koecher worked part time in a window cleaning business and had been looking for full-time work in St. George. Rolf Koecher said at the time that it looked like the man on that video is carrying a portfolio.
Koecher was active in his church, according to his father, and there was no indication of depression or drug use.
The fact that he told friends where he was and had made plans to visit his family for Christmas made Rolf Koecher think his son didn’t plan to disappear.
“Somebody Knows Something” is hosted by true-crime influencer Kara Chamberlain. The Koecher episode can be seen anytime on Disney+ and Hulu.
