An inmate was found dead late Saturday night at Cumberland County Jail.
Officers were doing routine rounds when they discovered the individual unresponsive in their cell just after 11 p.m., according to a press release from the Sheriff’s office.
Officers initiated emergency response procedures, including lifesaving measures, to try and revive the inmate. They requested medical assistance from additional jail medics and the Portland Medical Crisis Unit. Their efforts were unsuccessful.
The incident remains under investigation by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, Portland Police department and the Chief Medical Examiner.
The cause of death was not immediately clear and will be determined by the Chief Medical Examiner. Officials did not identify the individual and are not releasing further information.
