The James Beard Foundation Awards, often called the Oscars of the food world, are looking for a new home. Could Las Vegas be in the running?
This week, the foundation announced that it had begun selecting a city to host the awards for 2029 through 2033. The process includes accepting inquiries from interested U.S. cities. Since the inception of the Beards in 1991, only New York City (through 2014) and Chicago (since 2015) have hosted the event, which consists today of the Restaurant & Chef Awards, the Media Awards and the Impact Awards.
”Recent recognition from the James Beard Foundation, The World’s 50 Best Restaurants and the forthcoming Michelin Guide Southwest only reinforces the strength and momentum of our culinary scene,” Kate Wik, chief marketing officer for the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority, said in a statement for Neon.
”The LVCVA is always interested in opportunities that spotlight our chefs, restaurateurs, and hospitality community. We are still reviewing the Foundation’s information and timeline, so we are not in a position to discuss any specific bid plans or submissions at this time.”
Bid specifics aside, Vegas is now widely recognized as an international culinary destination, with bars and restaurants that are diverse and flourishing as never before, with that energy and pizzazz found nowhere else. All of which makes the case that Vegas could be a serious contender to be the next Beards city.
After all, who knows how to throw a party like Vegas?
Vegas culinarians react
Local Beard semifinalists and finalists from recent awards cycles uniformly expressed enthusiasm for the ceremonies being held here.
”This city is built on hospitality. We’d be incredibly proud to welcome the James Beard Awards here and show the country’s best chefs what Las Vegas is really about, ” said Brian Howard, chef-owner of Sparrow + Wolf, who was a semifinalist for Best Chef: Southwest in 2024 and a finalist in the category this year.
“I can’t think of a better stage to celebrate where American dining is headed than a city that’s never stopped redefining what’s possible,” he added.
Elizabeth Blau, CEO of Blau + Associates, an advocate for women in hospitality and a three-time semifinalist for Outstanding Restaurateur, including this year, said being the host city would, among other things, “give us an opportunity to introduce our incredible culinary talent to the entire Beard judging world.”
Joe Muscaglione, the co-owner of ShangHai Taste, whose fellow owner, chef Jimmy Li, has been a Best Chef: Southwest semifinalist, said Vegas’ long history of hosting large events weighs in its favor.
“No one has such a concentration of hotels in the world,” he said. “Add to that the concentration of restaurants here, the chefs from all over the world that have restaurants here.”
The Vegas connection
The relationship between the Beard Foundation and Vegas has grown stronger in recent years.
The organization has co-hosted Friends of James Beard dinners at local restaurants, including one at Casa Playa in Encore in 2024; collaborated on a dinner in May in New York City showcasing off-Strip semifinalists; and is headlining a tasting at the Aria pool as part of the inaugural Drink Las Vegas festival presented in September by MGM Resorts.
In 2026, Vegas received a record 14 semifinalist nods in the awards, with chef Sarah Thompson of Casa Playa eventually named Best Chef: Southwest, the first outright win for the city since 2010. (Thompson declined to comment for this article.)
Minimum spend? $4 million
This week’s announcement invites U.S. cities to submit request for information (RFI) responses to host the awards. The RFI sets forth a minimum $4 million commitment by the host city in Year 1, with increases in subsequent years not to exceed 5 percent. That commitment, according to the RFI, may be met through a combination of cash investment, approved cash sponsorships and public sector investment but not, notably, with in-kind contributions.
RFI submissions close Aug. 7. Destinations who best meet the review qualifications, including the ability to meet the financial and partnership commitment, will be asked to submit formal request for proposal responses. The selected destination will be announced in early 2027.
