BIDDEFORD — The man who was shot and killed in Biddeford on Monday morning has been identified as Joan Sebastian Guerrero, a 26 year-old originally from Colombia.
Guerrero was identified by one of his neighbors, who said they had spoken to a few times, pointing to Guerrero’s Facebook page filled with photos of his wife and young daughter. The name was also confirmed by an immigrant advocacy organization who said they had been in touch with the family.
Guerrero was shot by a federal immigration agent after he allegedly tried to flee in the officer’s direction, the Maine attorney general’s office said. It’s not clear which agency the agent works for. He has been put on leave, the AG’s office said.
Officials with the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement haven not responded to repeated requests for information about the shooting, including the victim’s name.
Nelson Elias, one of Guerrero’s neighbors, told the Portland Press Herald that he did not know many details about Guerrero’s life, but said he has a young daughter and a wife.
Elias did not see the shooting. He said when he stepped out of his house across the street from the incident, he said saw Guerrero’s wife crying at the scene, holding her daughter’s hand. Elias also said he was confident his neighbor was innocent.
“He was just trying to escape,” said Elias. “I just know it.”
