The BRRAlliance is pleased to announce a slate of events for May highlighting the significance of
birds in the community and boosting the small businesses in the North District during “Migratory
May”.
The month-long celebration begins on 10:00 AM Saturday May 02, with a Jane’s Walk being held highlighting the Grant-Amherst community. Jane’s Walk is an international walking festival dedicated to exploring the past and present of urban neighborhoods and fostering connections between neighbors. Meetup for the walk is at the Black Rock Historical Society, 436 Amherst St. This walking tour will be conducted by BRRAlliance Founder Mary Ann Kedron and BRRAlliance President Lou Haremski.
In honor of Migratory Bird Day, the BRRAlliance is hosting a “Migratory May” speaker series with presentations about the region’s birds, issues affecting them and ways we can help keep their populations healthy.
The series will kick off on Tuesday, May 5 when area conservationist Jay Burney talks about the relationship between the built environment, bird habitat needs during migration and the Lights Out/Dark Skies movements.
BRRAlliance Executive Director Anne McCooey will share helpful tips and ways for everyone to create bird friendly environments in their own neighborhoods and yards on Tuesday, May 12.
And NYS DEC Wildlife Biologist Connie Adams will wrap up the series on Tuesday, May 19 with a presentation on the birds that help make the Niagara River a designated Important Bird and Biodiversity Area and a prime area for birdwatching and eco-tourism.
All three presentations will begin at 6:30 PM at the Black Rock Harbor Center, 52 Amherst St.,
Buffalo NY 14207.
As May is also Small Business Month, the BRRAlliance is also hosting a “My Business is for the Birds” event where a lineup of businesses in the Grant-Amherst and Niagara Street commercial corridors will be decorating and displaying wooden birdhouses in a variety of themes. From May 08 to May 30, viewers will be able visit these locations, view the birdhouses, and learn more about these area businesses, then vote on their favorites, with the winning business to be announced in June during
the BRRAlliance 15th anniversary celebration. All participating businesses will be featured in social media postings and can be found on May 8th on the BRRA website, www.brralliance.org. Migratory May is brought to the community in part through the generous support of the
Paul & Helen Ellis Charitable Trust.
