Body of missing diver recovered 2 miles off Sand Island

The body of a missing diver was recovered about two miles from Sand Island Friday night, according to the Honolulu Fire Department.

HFD officials said they received a 911 call at 5:45 p.m. reporting an overdue diver near Mokauea Fishing Village in Kalihi. The man in his 30s planned to kayak out to Mokauea Island at 8 a.m. to dive and return around noon, HFD was told.

Six HFD units with 18 personnel responded to the 911 report and began a search from the shoreline before 6 p.m. Air 1 searched by air while HFD’s Rescue Boat and Ocean Safety Department’s Jet Ski searched by sea.

At about 9:10 p.m., a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter located the diver’s body roughly two miles offshore. The body was transported by boat back to shore.

HFD said the search encompassed the shoreline and the ocean from Sand Island to Barber’s Point and up to four miles offshore.
