Japanese culture: What you’ll learn

The Daikin Festival is an immersive experience blending Japanese and Southern cultures, starting with the first 2,500 guests receiving free happi coats. Many residents have kept collections of these over the years.
What are happi? Good question!
Below is a definition and a couple more of the many Japanese traditions you’ll learn at the Daikin Festival:
- Happi: Cotton, hip-length Japanese overcoats, tied with a sash
- Shodo: Japanese art of calligraphy using a brush, ink, inkstone + paper
- Amezaiku: The centuries-old Japanese folk art of crafting taffy-like candy into intricate shapes
- Big bonus: One of the few amezaiku masters in the world, Shinobu “Shan” Ichiyanagi will demonstrate the art at the festival!
- Pichonkun: Daikin’s mascot, a dew droplet introduced in 2003 + named for the sound it makes
Why does Daikin host a festival?

Daikin America, Inc. established a presence in Decatur three years after the company expanded into the United States and is a global leader in developing and manufacturing fluorochemical products. The parent company, Daikin Industries, Ltd., was established in 1924 in Osaka, Japan.
The festival shows appreciation for the company’s home community while fostering connections to and understanding of the Japanese culture.
“It’s our way of showing our appreciation for the wonderful community we call home.”
