Maui County officials said the shelter at Hana High School’s cafeteria closed at 5:30 p.m. after the state Department of Education decided to reopen school on Thursday.
There were no shelter attendees at that time, officials said.

The City & County of Honolulu has opened four emergency shelters on Oahu and Maui County is slated to open three shelters ahead of expected severe weather expected to affect the islands.
As of 1 p.m. today, city officials said these shelters are now open at the following locations:

>> Waianae District Park, 85-601 Farrington Highway
Due to heavy rains in Waimanalo, the city opened the emergency shelter at Kaneohe District park early on Tuesday night.
The shelters are being offered as a safe place for residents and visitors to go during the storm, officials said. Those seeking shelter are advised to bring their own food, water, medications, and other essential items whenever possible.
All shelters listed are pet-friendly, but pets must be leashed or in a carrier, and owners should bring necessary supplies.
“The City is continuing to assess conditions, and additional shelter locations will open as needed,” said officials in a news release.
City officials encourage all residents to stay informed by signing up for HNL Alert at hnlalert.gov or by texting HNLALERT to 888-777 to receive urgent notifications.

On Maui, three shelters will open at 5 p.m. today and remain in operation depending on the severity of the weather:
>> South Maui: South Maui Community Park Gym, 1501 Liloa Drive, Kihei
>> East Maui: Hana High School Cafeteria, 4111 Hana Highway, Hana
>> Central Maui: Velma McWayne Santos Community Center, 395 Waena St., Wailuku
Pets are allowed in crates, cages or on a leash.
