Class 4 quarterfinals
Hanover 5, Gloucester 4
The Dukes of Gloucester were defeated by the Hawks in a close game. Hanover meets Woodgrove on Friday at 10 a.m., played at Monticello High.
Atlee 7, Hampton 0
The Crabbers’ season came to an end with a sweeping victory by the Raiders. Atlee competes against Heritage at Monticello High on Friday at 1:30 p.m.

Class 6 quarterfinal
Western Branch 7, C.D. Hylton 0
WP: Haylee Bandura
Maddie Lemasters blasted a three-run home run in the first inning and was one of three Bruins with at least two hits in a victory at home. Marissa Bernheimer, Anna Kerns and Gracie Stone also finished with two hits. Bandura pitched a complete-game shutout, striking out six while surrendering four hits and walking none. Western Branch plays James Madison at 10 a.m. Friday in a state semifinal at Glen Allen High.
Class 4 quarterfinal
Gloucester 2, King George 0
Gloucester advanced to a softball state semifinal for the first time in school history with a 2-0 win over King George in a Class 4 tournament quarterfinal Tuesday at Gloucester.
Autumn Cookson (14-0) led the Dukes (24-0) by pitching a one hitter. She struck out 12 and walked just two.
“Autumn moved the ball in-and-out and up-and-down,” Dukes’ coach Red Lindsay said. “She followed what we thought was a good game-plan and executed it very well today.”
Cookson also scored the Dukes’ first run in their two-run bottom of the first inning on a single by Tessa Carteret. Avery West scored the other run from third in the inning as the front half of a double-steal.
“I’m just happy the girls have the opportunity to continue playing,” Lindsay said of the Dukes’ first state semifinal appearance in their fourth trip to the state tournament.
The Dukes will play their semifinal on Friday at Monticello High in the Charlottesville area against an opponent and at time to be determined.

Class 3 quarterfinal
York 5, Fauquier 2
After a tied 1-1 score in the first inning, the Falcons took the lead with four runs in the third. York plays Turner Ashby in a semifinal at 10 a.m. on Friday, hosted by Fluvanna County High.

Class 5 quarterfinals
Hickory 4, Maury 1
The Hawks ended the Commodores’ season with two goals in each half. Hickory advances to Friday’s semifinals against Lightridge at Deep Run High, 11 a.m.
Kellam 2, Menchville 1
Chase Taylor and Elijah Perry each scored to secure the win for the Knights. Kellam plays the winner of Riverside vs. Mills Godwin in a semifinal on Friday at 1:30 p.m., hosted by Deep Run High.

Monacan 2, Smithfield 0
The Packers’ season concluded with a shutout loss to the Chiefs. Monacan plays Blacksburg in a semifinal on Friday at 2 p.m. The game will be played at Monticello High.
Class 2 quarterfinal
Bruton 3, Fort Defiance 0
Eli Mitchell scored a penalty kick in the 22nd minute to put the Panthers on the board. Tim Walson added a goal in the 54th minute with an assist by Mason Crow, and Jordan Bridges followed with a goal in the 55th minute. Mitchell assisted Bridges. Bruton meets Radford at Roanoke College on Friday at 9 a.m. in a state semifinal.

Class 6 quarterfinal
Freedom-South Riding 3, Western Branch 0
The Bruins were blanked by the Eagles. Freedom-South Riding advances to the state semifinals against South County on Friday at 1:30 p.m., played at Douglas Freeman High.
Class 5 quarterfinals
Ocean Lakes 3, Menchville 1
Chloe McCall scored a brace and Addy Duprey added a goal for the winning Dolphins. Madison Moore provided two assists. The Monarchs’ goal was recorded by Alyssa Ware. Ocean Lakes plays Independence at 11 a.m. on Friday.
Kellam 6, Maury 0
Sadie Dickerson led the winning Knights with a brace. Reagan Thompson, Maca Argila, Mayson Ritchie and Evelyn Gmelin all scored once. Mills Godwin hosts Kellam on Friday at 1:30 p.m. in a semifinal.
