Move over, laundry cart. The Red Sox have a new home-run celebration in place.
Boston showcased its new dugout festivities in the first inning of Friday’s home opener against the Cardinals after Trevor Story and Wilyer Abreu slugged back-to-back home runs.
Story teed off against Cardinals starter Erick Fedde, depositing a belt-high sweeper into the Green Monster seats for a three-run shot — giving Boston a 4-0 lead at the time. Fedde’s very next pitch to Abreu was promptly golfed into right field to make it a 5-0 game.
As Story made his way back to the dugout after his three-run home, Jarren Duran was waiting near the steps with Boston’s new prop: a Wally The Green Monster head.
Duran placed the head atop Story, who then received a line of high-fives from his teammates while wearing the slightly disconcerting visage of the Red Sox’s mascot.
“It barely fits on our head, but, you know, I’ll slam it on my head no matter what,” Story said postgame after Boston’s eventual 13-9 win. “Hopefully we can wear it a lot this year.”
Less than a minute, Story was waiting for Abreu after rounding the bases — bestowing him the honor of donning the Wally head and repeating the same routine.

Shortly after both Story and Abreu left the yard, the Red Sox posted a video on X showing Duran receiving the Wally mascot head from the man (or monster?) himself at Fenway Park.
“This is insane,” Duran said of the mascot head, adding: “They’re going to freak out when everybody puts this on, yeah?‘”
Given the amount of power present in Boston’s lineup, that Wally head might receive plenty of wear and tear this summer at Fenway Park.
