An investigation is ongoing after a Shelby County Jail inmate died early Friday
Phillip Randall Ledford, 55, was arrested Feb. 21 by Pelham police on a robbery charge.
Shelby County sheriff’s Lt. Debbie Sumrall said he was assessed by on-site medical staff at the time of his booking and housed in the jail’s medical unit.
About 7:16 a.m. Friday, jail deputies and medical responded to Ledford who was in medical distress. They began life-saving measures, but Ledford was pronounced dead at 7:53 a.m.
Sheriff John Samaniego has requested the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office conduct an outside review of Ledford’s death, and also requested an autopsy be performed.
