A Dixfield man died after apparently falling out of his kayak Saturday on Ellis Pond in Roxbury, officials said.
The Maine Warden Service was notified shortly after 4 p.m. of a possible drowning.
Shawn Noyes, 20, had been kayaking with his family, Lt. Dan Menard wrote Sunday in a Maine Warden Service news release.
Noyes was seen in the water attempting to swim to a nearby island, when he disappeared and was feared drowned.
The air temperature Saturday was in the mid-50s and the water temperature would have been even colder. A person entering water at such temperatures would experience cold water immersion syndrome, which can lead to a loss of motor control within minutes.
The Maine Warden Service conducted a search Saturday evening with the help of the Roxbury, Mexico and Rumford fire departments.
Noyes’s kayak and life jacket were recovered from the pond.
On Sunday, the Maine Warden Service dive team recovered Noyes’s body; he was not wearing a life jacket. The Maine Warden Service said everyone should wear life jackets while recreating
on the water.
