South Point customers asked to conserve water for essential use only

The Hawaii County Department of Water Supply is asking South Point customers on Hawaii island to limit water use to essential needs only until further notice due to power outages and possible water system infrastructure damage due to Hurricane Nolo.

Customers are asked to use water only for drinking, cooking and food preparation, necessary personal hygiene, necessary sanitation and other essential household or health needs, according to a news release.

Customers are asked to temporarily avoid non-essential water use such as irrigation and lawn watering, washing vehicles, filling swimming pools or spas, pressure washing and other unnecessary or high-volume water use.

“Reducing water use will help preserve available water supplies and maintain adequate storage for essential needs while DWS works to stabilize the water system,” according to a statement.

Crews will assess the system for any damage and connect backup generators when weather conditions allow. Low water pressure or intermittent water service may be possible. DWS will notify customers when normal water usage resumes.

“DWS appreciates the public’s cooperation and understanding as crews work to maintain water service and address impacts to its infrastructure,” according to a statement.
