Hawaii under flood watch as rain from former Tropical Storm Norbert approaches

All Hawaiian islands are under a flood watch until late Thursday night as tradewinds spread rain from former Tropical Storm Norbert over the state.

“A band of remnant moisture from Norbert will move east across the islands tonight into Friday, bringing moderate to locally heavy showers,” according to the National Weather Service flood watch. “There is a slight chance of thunderstorms on Thursday as well, which could produce briefly higher rain rates, increasing the risk of flash flooding.”

Norbert, which grew into a tropical storm in the East Pacific, fell apart quickly in the Central Pacific earlier this week.

The weather service said breezy northeast tradewinds of 15-20 mph will help spread rain from Norbert’s remnants “across the state from east to west Thursday into Friday, increasing the chances of heavy rain, isolated thunderstorms, and flash flooding, especially for the windward and mauka areas.”

By this weekend, drier air will move back over Hawaii as the breezy tradewinds continue.

But by Tuesday or Wednesday, rain from the remnants of former Tropical Depression 15-E, which dissipated this week in the East Pacific, may bring another round of enhanced tradewind showers, forecasters said.
