Sphere has its own Mexican Independence Day anthem singer. Carín León, the Hermosillo native who’s spent the past two years collecting Grammys and headlining festivals, opened at the Bulbous Wonder on Friday night.
For this series, Sphere is the high desert of Sonora. The LED effects are a bonus as the música mexicana favorite stalked the stage and incited frivolity.
León deserves the adulation. The 37-year-old powerhouse has broken through one of the remaining Sphere barriers as the first Latin headliner ever at the venue.
León came to Sphere as a proven draw, selling out MGM Grand Garden Arena almost a year ago to the day. He also headlined T-Mobile Arena on Mexican Independence Day weekend in ’23. He has starred at the Grand Ole Opry, and in March ‘25 was the first Mexican artist to take the main stage at Rodeo Houston and drew more than 70,000, a record for a Hispanic artist.
León’s Grammys are for Best Música Mexicana Album (Including Tejano). He won this year for “Palabra De To’s (Seca)” and in 2025 for “Boca Chueca, Vol. 1.”
The showman acted the part of a superstar in his Sphere premiere. He donned a wicked-cool, Sinaloa-style hat with a silver feather, and white western-cut jacket adorned with an oversized black flower. His massive image played well on the Sphere’s famed 160,000-square-foot LED display.
With the GA crowd packed tightly in the lower bowl, León navigated the full breadth of the stage. He was the central, but not solitary, star of the show. The frontman was backed by a musically muscular 27-piece band that powered songs his devotees know by heart, among them “Según Quién” (his collaboration with Maluma), “Primera Cita” and “Desde Que Te Tengo.”
The band was as musically fulfilling as any to play Sphere. Even the blinged-out, amped-up accordion shone in the Sphere Immersive Sound setup. The notes encircled the room, forcing detractors to gain a new appreciation of this long-maligned instrument.
The brass section, a dozen musicians strong, produced a wall of sound that brought to mind Don Henley’s comments about the venue: “There are a lot of pretty pictures, but we’re about the music.”
For those not initiated (and we were in that minority Friday), a deep-dive is necessary. The aforementioned tunes are a good place to start. The show is performed almost entirely in Spanish, and León’s calls from the stage were all in his native language.
But “She Hurts Like Tequila,” his duet with country star Cody Johnson, is a sentiment that defies language. Johnson arrived with great flair and little warning, throwing his jacket into the crowd and acting like a guy feeling no pain.
Visual highlights included the largest snake to grace a Vegas production, from the album “Muda,” where the serpent/shedding skin symbolism represents artistic reinvention. We were also joined by a massive multicolored frog, or rather Sonoran Desert Toad. This creature gives off a natural, psychedelic substance and is revered in northern Mexico.
But there was no need for a toad-infused enhancement in this show. Tall cans of cerveza sufficed. León is still largely an unknown figure to many music fans. But he’s huge in his culture. Sphere has a way of making artists look bigger than they already are. But this star has returned the favor.
