A construction project at Maui High School was significantly vandalized Wednesday night or early Thursday morning, causing major damage to a new restroom being built for students and the public.
Concrete walls and columns, pallets of concrete blocks and other areas within the construction site were demolished, according to the state Department of Accounting and General Services.
The project is being built for the state Department of Education and is managed by DAGS.
DAGS Director Keith Regan, who also serves as the state comptroller and acting lieutenant governor, said the vandalism will delay the project and result in additional costs.
“Our contractor had been making great progress on this important project for our students and the community,” Regan said. in a statement “Now, due to this senseless act of vandalism, we will need to spend additional money and time to fix the damage, order more materials and restart the project.”
DAGS is asking anyone with information about the vandalism to contact the Maui Police Department.

The department has not provided additional details about the extent of the damage or whether any suspects had been identified.
