The man arrested in connection with a deadly assault in Piscataquis County was charged with murder on Tuesday.
Ryan Carleton, 49, of Guilford, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault following the attack that left a man dead and a woman in critical condition on Sunday, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss said in a news release on Monday.
Moss said the charges would be elevated pending a hearing in Piscataquis County Court on Tuesday. A court clerk confirmed Tuesday afternoon that Carleton has also been charged with intentional or knowing murder.
The Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office responded to 24 Pine St. on Sunday evening for a well-being check, Moss said on Monday. Sheriff’s deputies found a man and woman who were seriously injured next door at 26 Pine St. and requested assistance from state police.
The man died while being taken to a hospital, Moss said, while the woman was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and was considered to be in critical condition Monday.
The victims’ identities had not been released by officials as of Tuesday afternoon. The man’s body was transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for an autopsy.
The Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit is leading the investigation with assistance from the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office.
