Jordan Gravel will introduce a Cadenza audience to the unique sounds of the Hammond B3 organ at 7 p.m. Friday.
Gravel is the front man for his group, Jorgan Trio+1, a high-energy, Boston-based jazz and soul band. The group — Henley Douglas Jr. (saxophone), Andrew Jones (drums) and Christopher Brown (guitar), along with Gravel on the organ — performs a funky mix of deep grooves, classic jazz records and fiery improvisation.
The Hammond B3 organ is arguably the most famous electromechanical keyboard in music history, securing a legendary status across jazz, gospel, blues, rock and soul. Introduced by the Hammond Organ Company in 1954 and produced until 1975, it was originally designed by inventor Laurens Hammond as a lower-cost, space-saving alternative to traditional wind-driven pipe organs for churches. However, its unique physical architecture and warm, growling sonic capabilities quickly transformed it into a secular powerhouse.
