A portion of Kawaihae Road is closed this evening as crews battle a brush fire in South Kohala, according to Hawaii County Civil Defense. A wildfire advisory is in place for the Kawaihae area.
Kawaihae Road is closed between Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Waiaka Bridge in Waimea. Hawaii police said a separate closure extends between Waiula Drive and Queen Kaahumanu Highway and is expected to remain in effect for about six hours.
Waikoloa Road and Akoni Pule Highway remain open, with Waikoloa Road serving as the recommended alternate route.
Officials advised motorists to expect traffic delays and avoid the area if possible.
No communities are currently threatened, and officials said updates will be provided if conditions change.
