New Movies Streaming

‘The Long Walk’ (2025)

There were two Stephen King movie adaptations released in the final months of 2025 about ambulatory movement: Edgar Wright’s remake of “The Running Man,” and “The Long Walk,” an adaptation of King’s 1979 novel of the same. Both are set in a dystopian America where competitors fight to the death while a nation watches on TV. “The Long Walk,” in which about 100 teenagers walk to death until one remains, has the added benefit of a “Stand by Me” type of chemistry between competitors played by the likes of Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson.

How to watch: “The Long Walk” is streaming on HBO Max.

‘Project Hail Mary’ (2026)

Though it doesn’t quick stick the landing, in my opinion (read my review here), Ryan Gosling’s amusing sci-fi adventure is one of the most purely entertaining blockbusters in recent memory. Based on a novel by “The Martian” author Andy Weir, “Project Hail Mary” finds the “Barbie” actor playing a high school science teacher who wakes up from a coma in deep space, not knowing how he got there. As he slowly realizes, he’s humanity’s last hope — a responsibility he is very unprepared to accept.

How to watch: “Project Hail Mary” is streaming on Prime Video.

‘The Sheep Detectives’

For a movie that the whole family can enjoy, I’d recommend this amusing mystery, in which a herd of talking sheep tries to figure out how their shepherd, George (Hugh Jackman), wound up dead. The local police officer thinks George was poisoned, but because George had a habit of reading murder mysteries to his flock, these sheep — voiced by the likes of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Regina Hall and Patrick Stewart — aren’t about to succumb to herd mentality.

How to watch: “The Sheep Detectives” is streaming on Prime Video.

More new movies streaming: “Enola Holmes 3” (Netflix); “Lee Cronin’s The Mummy” (HBO Max); “The Man Will Burn” (HBO Max); “Reminders of Him” (Peacock);

New TV Shows Streaming

The Five-Star Weekend’

One of the biggest TV shows debuting this week was filmed on Nantucket: Beach read queen Elin Hilderbrand’s new series, “The Five-Star Weekend,”  which stars Jennifer Garner as a celebrity chef coping with the death of her husband and her subsequent (very public) nervous breakdown. By gathering her best friends (Regina Hall, Chloë Sevigny, D’Arcy Carden, and Gemma Chan) for a long weekend on the island, Hollis hopes to find a bit of peace. And while there are some laughs with this group, there’s a wistful, emotional depth to the show as well.

How to watch: “The Five-Star Weekend” is streaming on Peacock.

‘Little House on the Prairie’

If you’ve had a stressful week, Netflix’s adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s semi-autobiographical tale of a family living on a farm in the late 1800s is just the ticket. Following many of the same rhythms as the TV series from the ’70s and ’80s, the story of the Ingalls family and their efforts to carve out a place in the American West is wholesome, uncomplicated, and pleasant. Sometimes, that’s all you really need for a weekend watch.

How to watch: “Little House on the Prairie” is streaming on Netflix.

More new TV shows streaming: “Behind the Attraction” Season 3 (Disney+); “Elle” Season 1 (Prime Video); “Project Runway” Season 22 (Hulu); “Silo” Season 3 (Apple TV); “X-Men ’97” Season 2 (Disney+)
