New Movies Streaming

‘Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair’ (2004)

Quentin Tarantino always intended to release “Kill Bill” as a single movie, but with so much footage the director couldn’t bear to cut, one film became two. Watched in a single sitting, Boston native Uma Thurman’s career-best performance grows even stronger, as the blood-soaked mania of “Vol. 1” gives way to the melancholic notes of “Vol. 2”.

How to watch: “Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair” is streaming on Peacock.

‘The Truman Show’ (1998)

For those wondering why memes of Ed Harris’ character from this 1998 movie have been flooding social media the past few weeks, your guess is as good as mine. But it’s a great excuse to revisit Jim Carrey’s best performance, playing a man who has no idea that he has been the star of his own reality show since birth.

Carrey, nearing the end of an incredible run of hits, is a revelation in the film, showing audiences how deploying only 20 percent of his rubber-faced, bug-eyed schtick could be transformative. More importantly, director Peter Weir presents a withering look at the still-nascent reality TV genre, predicting a future of blatant product placement, invasive 24-7 surveillance, and parasocial relationships.

How to watch: “The Truman Show” is streaming on Paramount+ and on YouTube.

More new movies streaming: “The Bride!” (HBO Max); “Miss You, Love You” (HBO Max); “The Moment” (HBO Max); “Propeller Night Coach” (Apple TV)

New TV Shows Streaming

‘The Four Seasons’ Season 2

The first season of this Tina Fey and Steve Carell comedy-drama (adapted from the 1981 Carol Burnett and Alan Alda film of the same name) was almost too bitter to swallow. The second season smooths things out a bit, as the group coalesces in the wake of the death of [SPOILER REDACTED].

How to watch: “The Four Seasons” Season 2 is streaming on Netflix.

‘Spider-Noir’

Nicolas Cage is in his element as an eccentric, 1930s version of Spider-Man who has abandoned his superhero escapades in favor of private detective work. Prime Video gives you the choice to view the new series in “true-hue full color” or “authentic black & white”; despite the noir genre, I’d suggest choosing the former.

How to watch: “Spider-Noir” is streaming on Prime Video.

‘Star City’

When Apple TV+ debuted back in November 2019, it did so with two high-budget new shows: “The Morning Show” and “For All Mankind,” a sci-fi drama that imagined a revisionist history in which the Soviet Union beat America to the moon. While “Morning Show” has grabbed all the headlines, “For All Mankind” has been a consistently better watch. Apple TV seems to have realized this, and is releasing a new spin-off show told from the Soviet perspective on the same day that “For All Mankind’ ends its five-season run.

How to watch: “Star City” is streaming on Apple TV.

More new TV shows streaming: “Deli Boys” Season 2 (Hulu); “The Killer Among Us” (Peacock); “Rafa” (Netflix)
