Hawaii island police said an older man has died after a possible drowning while bodysurfing on Wednesday morning.
Police identified the man as Daniel Vasquez, 76, of Kailua-Kona.
Patrol officers got a call at 10:47 a.m. Wednesday for an unresponsive man pulled from the waters at Kahaluu Beach Park on Alii Drive.
A witness said Vasquez had been found unresponsive while bodysurfing. Lifeguards and bystanders brought Vasquez to shore, where CPR was initiated, along with the use of an AED.
The Hawaii Fire Department took Vasquez to Kona Community Hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead at 11:28 a.m.
Police have initiated a coroner’s inquest investigation, and ordered an autopsy to determine Vasquez’s exact cause of death. Police said no foul play is suspected at this time.
