I read the proposed referendum question regarding “trans rights,” drafted by Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, and shook my head in disbelief. I am a Democrat, and I am pro-trans rights. This draft referendum question is unnecessarily convoluted.
This is exactly the type of gamesmanship that voters hate. Bellows should remember that, one day, when a Republican wins her seat, they can do the same type of editorializing regarding a number of issues that are not favorable to liberals.
I believe Bellows’ referendum language will encourage people to vote against trans rights. Worded as it is, it appears the “libs are trying to rig the outcome.”
