I live next to Sunset Memorial Park cemetery in Pearl City. A number of graves are slowly sinking and there are signs that underground water is contributing to the settlement. The situation is distressing for families with loved ones buried there, but it might also be useful for nearby residents and officials to be aware of the condition. If there is an underlying drainage or subsurface water issue, understanding it early could help everyone plan appropriate maintenance or monitoring, both in the cemetery and around it. Residents should contact the Pearl City Neighborhood Board with related concerns.
Because ownership of the property is complicated, it has been difficult to determine who is responsible for arranging an investigation. I hope raising the issue publicly will encourage the appropriate agencies and professionals to take a closer look and provide guidance.
