WFAN host Craig Carton is calling hypocrisy on Mets fans.
On his afternoon show on Friday, the New York sports radio loudmouth criticized Mets fans who were upset by the Dodgers signing of Kyle Tucker.
“Wasn’t that what you were excited about when Steve Cohen bought the team from the Wilpons? Wasn’t that supposed to be what the New York Mets were going to do? Just outbid every other team for every player you wanted,” Carton said in a clip shared on X/Twitter. “That was the idea. So the Dodgers are just doing, in practicality, what you thought the Mets were going to do.”
Carton wasn’t finished there. He also pointed out how the Mets pivoted to Bo Bichette, doing to the Phillies exactly what the Dodgers did to the Mets with Tucker.
He stressed that there was no outrage over the Mets’ decision to overpay for Bichette, noting that the shortstop turned down a seven-year, $200 million offer in favor of what Carton described as essentially four one-year deals with New York, each carrying an opt-out tied to his performance.
“When did New York sports fans become so insecure and so sensitive?” Carton said.
On Friday, the Mets signed infielder Bo Bichette to a three-year deal worth $126 million. The contract contains no deferrals and opt-outs after the first and second seasons.
For the Mets, Bichette is the first true splash of this winter, an offseason that has featured the departures of several key pieces. The club’s all-time home run king Pete Alonso (Orioles) and elite closer Edwin Díaz (Dodgers) both bolted to new teams in free agency while outfielder Brandon Nimmo (Rangers) and utility man Jeff McNeil (A’s) were shipped off in trades.
The Mets have added relievers Devin Williams and Luke Weaver as well as infielders Marcus Semien and Jorge Polanco.
