The Hobart Fire Department conducted a formal promotion ceremony Monday, recognizing the advancement of six firefighters.
The event marked a historic milestone within the department because five of those promoted were to the rank of engineer, making them the founding members of the newly established position, officials said in a release.
During the ceremony, Charles Sawyer was promoted to the rank of lieutenant.
In addition, Brian Wedel, Bryan Sons, Kevin Williamson, Donald Peckler and Ciara Ditchcreek were promoted to the rank of engineer.
Fire Chief Enrique Lopez addressed attendees by emphasizing that promotions within the department are earned through dedication, training, and consistent commitment to service.
“Promotions are never handed out,” Lopez said. “They are earned through dedication, sacrifice, training, and an unwavering commitment to service. Each individual promoted today has demonstrated those qualities both on and off the fireground.”
Lt. Sawyer was recognized for his professionalism, positive leadership style, and willingness to exceed expectations in his role as a firefighter. Lopez noted that Sawyer consistently approaches his responsibilities with pride and energy, setting a strong example for his peers.
“There is no doubt that Lt. Sawyer will continue to lead by example and uphold the values and traditions of the Hobart Fire Department,” Lopez said.
The promotion of five firefighters to the rank of engineer represents a significant organizational development for the department. This newly established position serves as a critical operational role, bridging company officers and firefighters while ensuring the safe and effective operation of fire apparatus.
“These individuals completed extensive state certification training and successfully navigated a rigorous promotional process,” Lopez said. “By being the first, they are defining the standard for what the engineer position will represent moving forward.”
As engineers, the promoted firefighters are entrusted with the operation of department apparatus, crew safety, and key decision-making responsibilities during emergency responses. Lopez emphasized that the actions and professionalism of these founding engineers will shape expectations for future members who pursue the rank.
“Their decisions will matter on every run, every shift, and every emergency,” Lopez said. “Those who follow will look to them as the example of what an engineer in the Hobart Fire Department should be.”
The ceremony also recognized the role of family members in supporting the firefighters’ careers. Lopez thanked families for their patience, sacrifice, and continued encouragement, noting that promotions reflect the collective commitment of both firefighters and their loved ones.
“These promotions belong to the families as much as they do to the members standing before us,” Lopez said.
The event concluded with the official swearing-in ceremony administered by Hobart Mayor Josh Huddlestun, formally confirming the promotions.
