Kailua Road closures scheduled for installation of traffic signals

Intermittent closures of a stretch of Kailua Road leading to Kailua Town are scheduled Tuesday and Thursday for traffic signal installations, according to the state Department of Transportation.

Two closures are scheduled:

>> 10-11 a.m. Tuesday, for five minutes at a time, at the Uluoa Street intersection. Closures begin with the Kailua-bound lanes at 10 a.m. for the installation of a traffic signal mast arm. Then at 10:45 a.m., the Honolulu-bound lanes will be closed for bolt tightening work on the mast arm.

>> 10-11 a.m. Thursday, for five minutes at a time, at the Ulumanu Drive intersection. Closures of the Kailua-bound lanes begin at 10 a.m. to install and tighten mast arm bolts. Then at 10:45 a.m., Honolulu-bound lanes will close to complete the opposite side.

DOT said though the new traffic signals will be attached, they will remain covered until activated.

From 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, crews will also continue to work in the left lanes of both directions, widening turn pockets, installing signs, striping, and other curb work.

Special duty police officers will be on-site to assist with traffic control and safety procedures. Electronic message boards will be posted to notify motorists of the closures.

The estimated completion date of this project, which includes the new traffic signals and the removal of a speed hump, was originally expected to be done in November. DOT said its estimated completion date is now January.
