The school says the move will consolidate care and training at its Longwood campus.
The Harvard School of Dental Medicine announced last week that it is permanently closing its Cambridge clinic, citing an electrical fire and ongoing financial challenges.
In a statement to Boston.com, the school said it initially closed the 114 Mount Auburn St. location in April after an electrical fire caused significant damage and led to an extended shutdown. Combined with “current financial challenges,” officials said it was “no longer sustainable” to continue operating the clinic.
The Harvard School of Dental Medicine pivoted to offering care to Cambridge patients at its other clinical practice, 188 Longwood Ave. in Boston.
A spokesperson for the school said there are no plans to reopen in Cambridge.
“At this time, we are focusing on our clinical practice in Longwood to ensure we meet capacity and continue to maintain our educational, research, and patient service mission,” Heather Denny, the senior director of communications for the school, said in a statement.
According to the school’s website, dental students and residents provide care under the guidance of Harvard faculty at the Teaching Practices in Longwood.
This option offers “high-quality” treatment at reduced costs; however, appointments may take longer and often require multiple visits.
