According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Cesium-137 is a man-made radioisotope of cesium. Traces of it are widespread and can be present in the environment, while higher levels may be found in water or foods grown, raised, or produced in areas with environmental contamination.
Long-term, repeated, low-dose exposure to Cesium-137 may result in an elevated risk of cancer.
The FDA is actively investigating reports of Cs-137 contamination in shipping containers and frozen shrimp products manufactured in Indonesia by PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati is doing business as BMS Foods.
No illnesses have been reported to date, the FDA said.
The Hawaii Department of Health said this is the second Cesium-related recall of frozen shrimp in the past two weeks. The first recall was issued by Southwind Foods LLC for 2-pound bags of frozen raw shrimp skewers under the Great American Seaford Import Co. brand sold at local supermarkets.
Frozen shrimp subject to this recall originated from the same source, but were distributed under a different brand and by different sellers.
DOH said it is working with Hawaii stores to ensure that the recalled product is no longer available for sale.
