Visiting Alabama’s Church of the Reconciler, a safe place for food, rest and prayer

Rev. Sarah Smoot was a high schooler the first time she visited Church of the Reconciler.

A young Methodist, Smoot came from Mountain Brook, one of the wealthiest suburbs in the nation.

Upon entering the church in Birmingham, she found herself in a setting drastically different from the one she knew — congregants without housing, experiencing poverty.

As Smoot began to pursue ministry, she returned to the church.

“Just the joy of the community stood out to me more,” she said. “And also the agency that there are folks who are living on the streets, but come into Church of the Reconciler to also help others and be part of leading the ministries.”

Church of the Reconciler is a small United Methodist church near downtown Birmingham, serving many low-income and unhoused residents.

In 2020, Rev. Smoot became the pastor of Church of the Reconciler, and part of a staff of five people, with a regular congregation of 50.

Every Sunday morning, Smoot holds a service for those who wish to worship, and for those who simply need shelter.

One congregant, who identified himself as Wes W., said he first started attending more than two decades ago after walking in hungry from the street. He said it helped him turn his life around.

“I didn’t know what I was gonna do at that point, but I know everything started right here,” he said. “Bible study. Becoming willing to be of service, help keep the dining room clean, and mop the floor and take the trash out.

“Even though I didn’t know what I was talking about in the Bible study,” he continued, “I still got involved. Studying material, faith. But I started trying to get it right.”

Smoot told AL.com the church provides a safe place for the needy and the homeless to eat, rest, pray and recharge during the day.

“A lot of times it starts with just really basic level hospitality and welcome and letting people know that they have a safe space to not be judged and to start to experience positive communities,” she said. “Some of the ways we do that are by providing a mailing address for people who don’t have a place to get mail. When they start receiving their mail at the church, they make a positive connection with the staff and volunteers who are checking mail for them. They make positive connections with the other community members who are part of the church’s life.”

Following a recent service, we spoke with Rev. Smoot. Here’s what she told us:

What would you say is the mission of this church?

Our mission is to restore people to loving relationships with themselves and with God and with their community. That came out of recognizing that people who are in poverty — it didn’t just happen overnight. Usually a lot of ties were lost along the way in different ways, through death, or illness, or imprisonment, or long-term addictions, or mental health issues. And the loss of relationship is really what compounds the issue of poverty. Our goal is to help people have the opportunity for healthy relationships again with self, and with community and with God. That’s when we see people thrive.

How would you describe your congregation?

It’s really vibrant. It’s diverse in a lot of ways. Our congregation is racially diverse, but it’s also very economically diverse. We have members who come to church after spending the night on the streets, and we have members who come to church from low-income housing, and we have members who come to church from some of Birmingham’s suburbs. We’re a really unique, economically diverse community. And in that community, people are really willing to be vulnerable with each other and care about each other, which is something really special in the world today because there’s a lot of mistrust among people in different economic classes in other walks of life.

Are there any misconceptions about your church?

One misconception is just that we’re a social service agency more than a church. I would say that we’re always a church first, and that’s what makes us want to lean into helping people with their social services and getting through economic barriers, because that’s what Jesus did in the stories of the Bible. He helped people find physical healing that also reunited them with their world community.

So because we’re the church, that’s why we help people with their social services. And then being a community of a lot of people who are experiencing economic hardship and homelessness, we know that those people experience a lot of stereotypes when they’re out in the world, and those same stereotypes are seen when people think about our church. There’s a lot of fear of folks not wanting to talk to someone who appears to be unhoused, and I think if people could get an experience of talking to someone at Church of the Reconciler, some of those fears would fade away when they realize that everyone is a person too, no matter what they’re experiencing in life.
