Little Rock Weekend Guide: Sept. 4-7

We’re fully into a new month and the activities are already giving us a taste of fall. Let’s get into it.

 

Thursday, Sept. 4

First Thursday Shop & Sip in Hillcrest // It’s the first Thursday of the month, and that means it’s time to get your shop ‘n’ sip on. Soak up the Kavanaugh vibes while you take advantage of the later hours and extra fun like live music at Hocott’s Garden Center, a grand opening party at Domestic Domestic’s new location and the very groovy return of the Mrs. Roper’s Romp. Friday, Sept. 5

SoMa After Dark on South Main Street // Just south of 630, this quarterly event features area businesses offering later hours and special activities. Highlights this month include a 10th birthday celebration for South Main Creative, a thrift market at The Bernice Garden, a Pink House Alchemy pop-up at Pink Olive, an Althea Farms pecan pop-up at The Green Corner Store and the return of M2 Gallery‘s biggest annual event complete with multimedia installations and experiences, this year dubbed “EXP4: The M2 EXPerience.” SoMa After Dark runs 4-10 p.m. Learn more here.

Grand Opening at The Window on Sixth // More art in downtown Little Rock? Don’t mind if we do. This new pop-up gallery and event space is located at 112 W. Trivia Bee at Grace Presbyterian Church // This is your time to shine, factoid collectors. Come compete for the proverbial trophy to raise funds for Literacy Action of Central Arkansas. If your palms are sweating at the thought, you can cheer on a team and still get in on food, drinks and a silent auction while you’re at it. It all starts at 6 p.m. Learn more here.

Leanne Morgan at Simmons Bank Arena // With a handful of hit standup specials and a new Netflix series under her belt, this comedian is bringing her “Just Getting Started” tour to the NLR stage with her signature dose of Southern charm. Showtime is 7 p.m. Learn more here.

“Don’t Look Back” at UA-PTC CHARTS // Kicking off the school’s CHARTS Live season is this documentary following Bob Dylan’s 1965 acoustic tour “before he went electric.” Along with the screening, guests will enjoy live music from Justin Bank and the Bijou Boogie Boys. Thursday & Friday, Sept. 4 & 5

Classic Movies at Ron Robinson Theater // The popcorn is flowing once again at the CALS theater in the River Market. Up first is “Seven” on Thursday, then “Better Off Dead” on Friday, both at 7 p.m. Learn more here.

 

Saturday, Sept. 6

Pocket Park Pop-Up at the Main Street Pocket Park // Attention, shoppers. This popular outdoor market is back with a full lineup of local vendors, artists, food trucks and vintage finds. Come shop 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Learn more here.

Adult Prom at BoBrook Farms // Scram, chaperones. The farm is bringing the fun this weekend by letting the grownups turn back the clock. Expect good eats, drinks, prom royalty and nonstop tunes to awaken any dance moves you just thought you retired. The party starts at 7 p.m. Learn more here.

Throwback Concerts // The nostalgia continues back in the heart of the city with two shows that will have you reminiscing in rhythm. Dial Up, the ’90s party band from Fayetteville, returns to The Hall to relive the hits of the decade. At the Robinson Center, Orchestra Noir “reimagines the biggest 2000s hip-hop and R&B hits through an orchestral lens.” Both shows are at 8 p.m., so good luck choosing.

Sunday, Sept. 7

“Wasted! The Story of Food Waste” at the Historic Arkansas Museum // Ahead of its signature event this month, Potluck Food Rescue is hosting a special screening of this documentary that underscores the nonprofit’s mission to fight food insecurity and keep food out of landfills. Admission is a donation of a nonperishable food item. Showtime is 2 p.m. Learn more here.

Saturday & Sunday, Sept. 6 & 7

AMFA Art Market at the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts // Art aficionados and casual lovers alike will want to cement this inaugural event into their social calendars. Attendees can shop more than 30 artist booths from across the country, including the work of “emerging Arkansas artists” from the Windgate Art School, plus hear free art talks led by local gallerists. Come shop 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Sunday. Learn more here.

Thursday – Sunday, Sept. 4-7

Acansa Arts Festival of the South // Spanning the course of three weekends, this event returns for its 10th fest with a schedule packed with all sorts of performances on both sides of the river. Opening weekend features shows from Little Rock’s own Funkanites, classical group Frisson and the Koresh Dance Company. Learn more here.

“The Glass Menagerie” Opening Weekend at the Arkansas Repertory Theatre // An American icon takes over The Rep as Tennessee Williams’s modern masterpiece comes to life to examine memories and illusions, expectations and dashed hopes. Learn more here.

Arkansas Travelers vs. Amarillo Sod Poodles at Dickey-Stephens Park // Play ball, y’all. The Travs take on the Texas team in this week’s series, which also features different specials each night like fireworks and special discounts. Learn more here.

Red in the Rock Weekend // And of course, we’ve saved the most raucous for last. With the Arkansas Razorbacks set to take on the Arkansas State Red Wolves (for the first time ever!) at War Memorial Stadium on Saturday, the whole city is seeing red for days. There’s the chamber’s tailgate party at Park Plaza Mall on Thursday, a reggae kickoff at the River Market Pavilions on Friday, a closing concert featuring Waka Flocka Flame on Sunday and lots of alumni events on both sides throughout the weekend. On game day, the Red in the Rock FanFest at the stadium starts at 10 a.m. and runs until kickoff at 4 p.m. Learn more here.
