BET plans to suspend its annual Soul Train Awards and Hip Hop Awards shows.
BET CEO Scott Mills disclosed the news during an interview in Billboard.
“So for BET linear, we have suspended the Soul Train and Hip-Hop award shows,” Mills said in the interview.
Mills clarified that so far, the awards shows weren’t cancelled indefinitely, but rather put on hold until the network could find the best platform for the show moving forward.
“We have a team that’s actively thinking about where those award shows might best live as the media climate continues to evolve. They aren’t gone,” Mills said.
“It’s less about them being no longer and more about our team having to reimagine them for this changing media landscape that we find ourselves in. I think what we’re going to see are more people taking franchises and saying, ‘This might have started on linear television, but now I’m going to move it to another space. Do I move it to streaming? Or do I move it to another platform?’ ” Mills continued, according to VIBE magazine.
Other cancelled shows on network television
HGTV has cancelled a number of shows. In June, the network announced it was axing four of its programs– “Farmhouse Fixer,” “Married to Real Estate,” “Izzy Does It” and “Bargain Block.”
In July, the network cancelled Christian Haack’s “Christina on the Coast” and Tarek El Moussa and Heather Rae Moussa’s “Flipping El Moussas.”
