“The stuff you see on TV with the leadership, and then now knowing what he was doing, is pretty cool.”
Drake Maye was a junior in high school when Tom Brady was playing his final season with the Patriots in 2019.
Brady might be affiliated with the Raiders as a partial owner, but the future Hall-of-Famer is still serving as a valuable resource to New England’s young QB … given the amount of tape that New England holds of Brady over his 20-year run with the Patriots.
And, with Brady’s longtime offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels back in New England for his third tenure as the team’s OC, Maye has plenty of resources at his disposal as he tries to take another major step forward in 2025.
Appearing on “Up and Adams” with Kay Adams on Wednesday at Patriots training camp, Maye was asked about his top takeaway after watching hours of Brady film.
“Easy. I think the one thing with Tom, he always knew where to go with the football,” Maye said. “He was great with knowing where to go with the football, beating blitzers, knowing where to go before he got the snap. … And his feet were always in the ground, ready to throw.”
“Those are the big things I saw from watching him on tape,” Maye added of Brady. “The stuff you see on TV with the leadership, and then now knowing what he was doing, is pretty cool.”
Maye has a long way to go if he wants to follow in Brady’s footsteps and re-establish the Patriots as a premier power in the NFL once again.
But, the No. 3 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft has already impressed his teammates and coaches during training camp when it comes to his poise under center and his growing presence as a leader.
“I think you’ve got guys around here that are tired of losing around here and guys that want to win,” Maye said of New England’s outlook in his first media availability of training camp. “I think that’s what excites me most. Guys want to win around here. I think the past two or three years around here in the past year for me, I can only speak for myself, but I think there’s guys around here that are tired of losing and want to win.”
“He’s been doing his thing,” Patriots wideout DeMario Douglas added of Maye. “He’s definitely becoming that leader. I feel like this is his team. He brings energy into the facility and on the field. He says nothing but encouraging things. If something goes bad, he does nothing but lift us up.”
