A New Jersey doctor charged with sex crimes against patients in three counties has been indicted on numerous charges.
Gurvindra Johal, 57, of the Colonia section of Woodbridge, was initially charged separately in each county in 2023 before the OAG’s office consolidated the charges, leading to a state grand jury indictment.
His attorney, Brooke Barnett, said her client’s accusers are lying.
“Dr. Johal vehemently denies these allegations and although this has impacted his life, his family and his unblemished reputation we look forward to our day in court,” Barnett said in an emailed statement. “These cases against Dr. Johal arise out of pure opportunity and greed and when each of these alleged victims are scrutinized for their lack of credibility, justice will prevail. The cases lack any reliable physical or scientific evidence and is an absolute smear campaign riddled with anti Sikh and Indian sentiment.”
Five of the incidents took place in Middlesex County, with three in Essex and two in Monmouth.
Johal is charged with two counts of sexual assault and 11 counts of criminal sexual contact, the state Office of the Attorney General said. He is also charged with one count apiece of falsifying or tampering with records and alteration of records pertaining to medical care for allegedly lying about an assistant being in the room during the exams by altering medical records.
Johal’s next court date is July 3.
The investigation began when a woman reported that Johal touched her inappropriately at an urgent care facility in Perth Amboy. Authorities found other alleged victims after launching an investigation — four at an urgent care facility on Broad Street in Newark and two at a facility in Freehold Township.
Johal’s medical license has been suspended since March 2023.
