Man arrested after he shot at 2 cops and threatened woman, officials say

A man was arrested on attempted murder and other charges after he allegedly shot at two Secaucus police officers responding to a domestic violence call on Sunday night.

The incident began at around 7:45 p.m. after police were notified that a man stole the phone of a woman he knew and threatened her at an apartment on County Avenue, Secaucus police said.

About an hour later, officers found a man matching his description sitting in the open doorway at a the nearby Peter Pan bus building.

As two uniformed sergeants approached the doorway they observed a handgun, officials said.

The man — later identified by police as Dhanraj Dass— fired one round at police that missed. As one police officer tried to move, the man again fired and missed, police said.

Dass then retreated inside the building as the officers called in a SWAT team and other Secaucus police officers to assist.

But before police said they could set up a perimeter, Dass ran out a different door and was arrested.

A search of him didn’t turn up a gun, police said.

Authorities called in other departments to determine if there were other suspects and to help safely evacuate the employees.

Investigators then obtained a search warrant for the commercial building and found a handgun that had been reported stolen in Texas.

Dass, 59, of Jersey City was charged with two counts of criminal attempt to commit murder, aggravated assault, terroristic threats, receiving stolen property and weapons offenses.

An attorney is not listed for Dass in court records.

Police from Bayonne, West New York, North Bergen, Hoboken and Lyndhurst assisted along with the State Police, the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office and the county SWAT team.
