Real Salt Lake attacker Diego Luna will be part of the U.S. Men’s National Team camp next month.
A year out from the 2026 World Cup, Luna the camp will serve as another chance for Luna to impress coach Mauricio Pochettino.
“As we continue preparations for the World Cup, this is a fantastic opportunity to work with this group of players for an extended period and it’s important we take advantage of every moment we have together,” Pochettino said. “Of course, we want to win and to perform in a very good way. These players have earned the chance to compete for our fans and to show their quality and mentality.”
Luna broke his nose but still delivered the game-winning assist during his first minutes for the U.S. in a friendly earlier this year against Costa Rica.
Next month’s camp will be held in Chicago. The camp leads into two friendly matches. First, the USA will host Turkey on June 7 in Hartford, Conn. Three days later, Luna and the U.S. will take on Switzerland in Nashville, Tenn.
The 21-year-old Luna has been a standout for Real Salt Lake this season, scoring a team-high seven goals.
“I don’t think we can talk about Diego ‘developing’ anymore. He’s the guy,” RSL coach Pablo Mastroeni said earlier this year. “He’s the guy that plays with a chip on his shoulder. I feel like he’s one of our best defenders, and he plays on the front line. He’s obviously the guy that’s putting the ball in the back of the net. He’s doing it all for our group, man.”
