Brandon Hyde took the Baltimore Orioles from losing 100 games multiple seasons in a row to a team that made the playoffs in consecutive seasons and won the division. He didn’t construct this team, letting players like Corbin Burnes go while replacing him with aging veterans past their prime (“Orioles fire manager Brandon Hyde after 15-28 start to season,” May 17).
Hyde didn’t physically injure all of the O’s players on the Injured List or IL with his bare hands. He doesn’t swing the bat with runners in scoring position or take the mound every five days to start a game. Yes, he’s the manager and when a team doesn’t perform and someone has to go, the manager is usually out the door first.
But let me say this: Mike Elias, the team’s general manager, had better not be too far behind him out the door.
Thank you, Brandon Hyde, for everything you did on behalf of this team, this city and the fans in the time you were here. Best of luck wherever you end up next and you are always welcome back in Baltimore.
