What O’s need is an owner willing to spend.

Yes, you can easily blame Orioles General Manager Mike Elias for their current situation (“Elias is single-handedly destroying the Orioles,” April 28).

Yet with this owner and with the last one, it often seems the GM’s hands are tied with the goal of keeping the team’s payroll among the lowest in Major League Baseball. The O’s are seen as a small-market baseball team unworthy of even the MLB average payroll. The consequences of this are 100-loss seasons and dumpster diving for free agents past their prime.

Yet fans are expected to pay full MLB prices to watch what often seems like a minor league team.

I’m tired of celebrating past glory like the 1983 World Series champs (yes, from 42 years ago) and freebies like plastic bobblehead nights. I’m still hopeful that current ownership will continue to increase payroll and not see our young talent leave for free agency like Manny Machado.
