Real Salt Lake let an early lead slip away and lost to host Nashville SC 2-1 on a penalty kick in stoppage time on Saturday.
Nashville striker Sam Surridge scored the decisive goal in the 91st minute, after teammate Hany Mukhtar drew a foul on RSL midfielder Nelson Palacio in the box.
RSL took a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute when Dominik Marczuk scored off a rebound, after Nashville goalkeeper Joe Willis made a diving stop of a shot by Diogo Gonçalves.
Nashville’s Daniel Lovitz tied the game with a goal off a header in the 30th minute.
RSL fell to 3-5-0 on the season, while Nashville improved to 4-3-1.
Nashville had a 21-12 edge in shots in the game, with a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. Willis made four saves for Nashville, while RSL’s Rafael Cabral had five.
RSL’s Pablo Mastroeni was denied his 100th career coaching win.
Real Salt Lake is scheduled to host Toronto next Saturday (7:30 p.m., Apple TV) before beginning a stretch of three straight road games.
