Baylor’s Robert Wright III will sign with BYU, replacing NBA-bound Egor Demin

Head coach Kevin Young went to the transfer portal and came up with another five-star.

It only took a couple of days for Cougars head coach Kevin Young to find his next floor general.

BYU is bringing former Baylor guard Robert Wright III to replace the NBA-bound Egor Demin. Wright averaged 11.5 points and 4.2 assists per game. He shot 35% from three in his lone college season.

While the scoring and assist totals are comparable to Demin’s, his attributes are quite different. Wright is 6-foot-1 compared to Demin’s 6-foot-9 frame. BYU will still have size with AJ Dybantsa and Keba Keita — 6-foot-9 each — but the backcourt will be smaller.

Wright was a highly recruited prospect out of high school, playing at Montverde Academy. He was teammates with this year’s presumptive No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg. Several other NBA draft prospects were on that team, including UConn’s Liam McNeeley and Maryland’s Derik Queen.

Wright was regarded as the best point guard in his high school class, a five-star recruit above Auburn’s the and Alabama’s Labaron Philon.

He was rated the eighth-best prospect in the transfer portal this cycle, and the third-best guard. New Mexico’s Donovan Dent and Drake’s Bennett Stirtz were ranked one and two, respectively.

Wright played BYU in Provo this year, scoring 22 points in 39 minutes.

Presumably, Wright will move into a starting role immediately. That gives BYU a rough starting lineup of Dybantsa, Wright III, Keita and possibly Richie Saunders if he stays. The Cougars will likely need to add another guard in the transfer portal and maybe another starter.
