SARASOTA, Fla. — John Oliver might have a hard time keeping his son a loyal Mets fan.
The comedian and late-night television host made a recent appearance on “Late Night With Seth Meyers” and talked about the pain associated with his fandom of rooting for New York. He said his 8-year-old son asked him multiple times last season if he could switch teams, including after his favorite player, Pete Alonso, signed with the Orioles.

“I knew — I think he’s going to be leaving,” Oliver told Myers. “And watching him fall in love with this guy, he has a signed ball, and having to go into his room and say, ‘Pete Alonso’s gone to Baltimore,’ and he said, ‘Are you sure I can’t be an Orioles fan?’ ‘We’ve had this discussion.’”
Word got back to Alonso about Oliver’s son having doubts in his fandom, and he responded through the Orioles’ social media accounts, inviting both of them to make the trip out to Camden Yards this summer.

“I saw what your son had to say about being upset of me signing with the Orioles, but hey, he can always become an O’s fan,” Alonso said. “Would love to extend an invitation to you and your family to come down to Camden [Yards] for a game this year, and you guys can get out on the field for batting practice and hopefully you guys come down, have some fun.”
Alonso signed a five-year, $155 million contract with the Orioles this offseason, joining Baltimore after seven prolific seasons with the Mets. Though Oliver appears prepared to stick it out with New York, which underwent a roster upheaval over the winter, his son might not be able to completely let Alonso go if he gets the chance to meet him this season.
