A 3-year-old Waikoloa girl was killed Friday evening after being struck by a reversing SUV in a parking lot, Hawaii island police said.
At about 7:12 p.m., a 2017 Nissan Pathfinder, driven by a 26-year-old Waikoloa woman, was reversing in the parking lot of a residential complex off Waikoloa Road (Highway 191) when the toddler ran behind the vehicle and was struck, police said.
The girl suffered critical injuries and was taken to Queen’s North Hawaii Community Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 8:50 p.m. Police did not release her identity.
Police said they do not believe that speed, alcohol, and/or drugs were factors in this collision.
The Hawaii Police Department’s Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit has initiated a major traffic collision investigation. Anyone who witnessed the collision is urged to contact Officer Adam Roberg at (808) 326-4646, ext. 229, or via at [email protected]. Those witnesses wishing to remain anonymous can call CrimeStoppers at (808) 961-8300.
Police said the death does not affect Hawaii County’s year-to-date traffic fatality count because it occurred in a parking lot.
