A blizzard warning was released by the National Weather Service on Sunday at 2:56 a.m. valid from 10 a.m. until Monday 6 p.m. for Salem County.
“Blizzard conditions expected. Total snow accumulations between 17 and 22 inches. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph,” comments the weather service. “Snowfall rates could exceed 2 inches per hour. Locally higher snowfall amounts and significant drifting of snow possible.”
“Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions will impact the Monday morning and evening commutes. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches and result in isolated power outages,” describes the weather service. “Travel should be restricted to emergencies only. If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle. The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 5 1 1.”
What to do during a blizzard warning
Blizzard warnings are issued by the weather service for frequent gusts greater than or equal to 35 mph accompanied by falling and/or blowing snow, frequently reducing visibility to less than 1/4 mile for three hours or more. A blizzard warning means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. Falling and blowing snow with strong winds and poor visibilities are likely, leading to whiteout conditions making travel extremely difficult. Do not travel. If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle and wait for help to arrive.
