President Donald Trump said Saturday that he would charge a 10% import tax starting in February on goods from eight European countries because of opposition to U.S. control of Greenland.
He said in a social media post that Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland would face the tariff, which would be raised to 25% on June 1 if a deal is not in place for “the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland” by the United States.
Meanwhile, hundreds of people in Greenland’s capital braved near-freezing temperatures, rain and icy streets to march in a rally on Saturday in support of their own self-governance in the face of threats of an American takeover.
The Greenlanders waved their red-and-white national flags and listened to traditional songs as they walked through Nuuk’s small downtown. Some carried signs with messages like “We shape our future,” “Greenland is not for sale,” and “Greenland is already GREAT.”
Thousands of others joined them in rallies across the Danish kingdom.
The rallies occurred hours after a bipartisan U.S. congressional delegation in Copenhagen sought to reassure Denmark and Greenland of their support following Trump’s threat to punish countries with tariffs if they don’t back the administration’s stance that the United States should take control of the strategic Arctic island.

This past week, as Trump stepped up his pressure campaign to claim Greenland, the White House posted an image on X that showed a dog sled facing a fork in the trail, one that leads to an American flag and the White House and another that leads to the Russian and Chinese flags. Above the image was the phrase, “Which way, Greenland Man?”
The post refers to a meme that riffs off the title of a notorious white supremacist book titled “Which Way Western Man?” The administration had already used the framing in an Immigration and Customs Enforcement recruiting post last year, which asked, “Which way, American Man?”

“I’m sick of stupid,” the two-term Republican from North Carolina said from the Senate floor recently as he derided Trump‘s advisers for stoking a potential U.S. military takeover in Greenland.
It was just one of several moments during the opening weeks of 2026 when Tillis, who isn’t seeking reelection, seemed unconstrained by the anxieties that weigh down many of his GOP colleagues who are loath to cross the White House for fear of triggering a political backlash.
He’s one of just two Republicans, along with Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, who participated in a congressional delegation to Denmark this week while Trump threatens to seize Greenland.
Trump was also quick to criticize the Justice Department’s investigation of Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell.
