‘Lightsabers on Ice’ returns to Portland’s weirdest mall

Fan Expo Portland returns to the city this weekend, and with it, an official afterparty that’s open to anyone: Lightsabers on Ice takes to the Lloyd Center ice rink from 8 to 10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16.

The event is a chance to visit Portland’s mostly empty mall after hours and skate with “Star Wars” fans — many in costumes — while a DJ spins music.

Cost is $20 and includes a skate rental and lightsabers to borrow while you’re on the rink. Tickets can be purchased online from Legion Sabers.

The event is put on by Docking Bay 45, the immersive “Star Wars” inspired shopping experience inside the mall where customers can design custom lightsabers, purchase cosplay armor and take lightsabering lessons.

Costumes are encouraged at the all-ages event. Participants can either borrow (or buy) a lightsaber to use while skating, or bring their own.

The event will include music and a lightsaber giveaway.

If you can’t make the January event, stay tuned: “Sabers on Ice Episode III: Revenge of the Rink” is coming, with a date yet to be announced.
