The National Weather Service has issued both a high surf advisory and a wind advisory for most Hawaiian islands, effective until 6 p.m. today.
The high surf advisory covers the north and west shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu and Molokai, and the north shores of Maui.
Surf is expected reach 12 to 16 feet along north shores; 8 to 12 feet along west shores.
Weather officials warn of strong, breaking waves and strong currents, which will make swimming dangerous. The public should heed all advice from ocean safety officials.
A wind advisory has been issued over the mountains and the north and east areas of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai and Maui.
Forecasters are expecting south winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts of 40 to 50 mph, particularly at the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, as a cold front moves into the Hawaii region today.

“Winds this strong can tear off shingles, knock down tree branches, blow away tents and awnings,” said NWS. “Driving may become difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.”
The public should beware of falling tree branches when walking and driving, secure tents and awnings, and prepare for power outages.
The front is expected to bring “a decent amount of rainfall with this next frontal passage” on all islands, forecasters said, along with a few possible thunderstorms.
A small craft advisory covering most waters and channels also remains in effect through 6 p.m. Thursday.
